COVID-19 Back 2 School Tips

Back to school is always a stressful time, but this year is so much more jammed packed with complications. A global pandemic, social injustices, and the fact that the 2020 election is just around the corner.

Some schools have already started opening and there have been headlines of those schools reporting cases of infected students and faculty. This post is in no way meant to sway your decision for in-person or virtual learning, but to give you tips to keep your children as safe as possible in these uncertain times.

Tip #1: Set the example.

Wearing a mask has become a norm that we must embrace to get children back into the classroom. Even when you are properly socially distanced from others, try to keep your mask on and cover both your nose and mouth at all times. If you plan on your child catching the bus to school, consider putting your mask on before getting in the car for any errands or grocery trips.

Tip #2: Get masks that your child would love.

No one knows your child more than you. Consider finding masks featuring their favorite cartoon characters and even personalized masks including their name.

Tip #3: Talk to your child

If you feel as though your child is old enough to learn of the importance of mask wearing and the possibility of becoming sick or bringing the virus back home to loved ones. If your child is too young, try stressing hand washing. Find one of their favorite songs and use a 20 second clip for them to sing along with as they wash their hands. If you are out and about try whispering or singing the song however loud you are comfortable to reinforce this norm.

Tip #4: Monitor your child’s temperature

Although many schools are checking temperatures, before allowing your children to leave the house check to make sure they aren’t running a fever. This is not only helpful for the school, but also reassures you that you will not be getting a call about your child's temperature when they arrive to the building.

Tip #5: Look for virtual groups/ classes for your children
